Directed by Yasujirō Ozu
Year of Production: 1953
Duration: 2hr 16min

Tokyo Story is a masterpiece by Yasujirō Ozu which explores the generational differences in post-war Japan. Retired couple Shūkichi and Tomi Hirayama make a rare trip out of their rural Onomichi township with daughter Kyōko to visit their son, daughter and widowed daughter-in-law in Tokyo. On arrival, they discover the burgeoning capital and the priorities of their family are distinctly different to their expectations.

Tokyo Story was voted the best film of all time in a poll of film directors in the British Film Institute’s Sight & Sound magazine (2012). Shot on location in Tokyo and Onomichi, Tokyo Story is a beautifully paced film featuring extraordinary cinematography.
