Speakers:
Peter McNeil was trained in the history of art with a focus on design history. His research engages with different ways in which visual imagery and materiality shaped lives from the eighteenth century to the present day. Recent publications include The Fashion History Reader: Global Perspectives, 2010 (Routledge; with G. Riello); Fashion: Critical and Primary Sources, Renaissance to the Present Day (4 Vols.), Berg, 2009; and Fashion Writing and Criticism: History, Theory, Practice (2014, with S. Miller). Current works in preparation: Luxury: A Rich History (with G. Riello, OUP); Reigning Men (Prestel/LACMA); and Pretty Gentlemen: the 18th century Fashion World. He is Professor of Design History in the School of Design at the University of Technology, Sydney and Foundation Professor of Fashion Studies at Stockholm University. In June 2014 he was appointed a Finland Distinguished Professor by the Academy of Finland at Aalto University.
Angus Trumble is Director of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. He was previously Senior Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut. He is the author of A Brief History of the Smile (2003), and The Finger: A Handbook (2010). His latest book (co-edited with Professor Andrea Wolk Rager of Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio), Edwardian Opulence: British Art at the Dawn of the Twentieth Century, was shortlisted for the 2013 Spears Book Awards in London. Angus is a regular contributor to The Times Literary Supplement, The Burlington Magazine, the Paris Review, Esopus Magazine, and the Australian Book Review.
Josephine Inge is a Principal of 1Place Patent Attorneys + Solicitors – a specialist intellectual property law firm with a fashion law practice. She is an alumna of the Fashion Law Institute of Fordham University, New York, and has a Masters of Laws from the University of Melbourne, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New South Wales and Bachelor of Science with first class honours in neuroscience from the University of Sydney. Josephine practices as both a solicitor and a registered patent attorney. This makes her potentially the only patent attorney with a sense of fashion. Her interest in fashion extends to design generally, and for many years she was a regular contributor to the well-regarded industrial design magazine Curve.
