Kate Scardifield is a visual artist with a research driven interdisciplinary and experimental studio practice. Encompassing textiles, sculpture, installation, video and sound, her work has been included in numerous exhibitions throughout Australia and recently in New Zealand and the United States. She likens her practice to a process of anatomical enquiry – mining history for intersecting systems and patterns that culminate in re-imaginings of the body, site and space. Across her work an innate connection to materiality is evident.

Kate holds a PhD from the University of Sydney. Her research continues to examine the relationship between anatomical enquiry and art practice. Kate is also an experienced educator – she has developed programs and resources for, amongst others, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Performance Space and Museums & Galleries NSW. In addition she has lectured in Textiles at UNSW Art & Design and is currently teaching Interdisciplinary Design and Fashion Theory at UTS.

Kate is a 2012 Freedman scholar and in 2013 was the recipient of the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship for sculpture and a New Work grant from the Australian Council for the Arts. She has participated in international residency programs in New Delhi (2012), Paris (2012) and Oaxaca (2014). Currently Kate is developing new work as part of the City of Sydney’s Creative Live Work Studios program and is working towards a touring exhibition project for Scotland in 2017.
